Building Your Perfect Bouquet

Making your own bouquet is easier than you think—and it's a fun way to get creative with fresh flowers. Whether you're gifting it or keeping it for yourself, here's a quick guide to building a simple, beautiful bouquet.

Step 1: Gather Your Materials

Before you dive in, make sure you have everything you need:

  • Fresh flowers (see suggestions below)

  • Greenery or filler stems

  • Floral shears or sharp scissors

  • Floral tape or string (optional)

  • Ribbon (optional)

  • A clean vase (if you’re not hand-tying the bouquet)

Step 2: Choose Your Flowers

Pick 3–5 varieties of flowers for interest and balance. A basic floral recipe includes:

  • Focal flowers: These are the stars (e.g., dahlias, sunflowers, zinnias). We always like to work in odd numbers to help balance out the bouquet.

  • Supporting flowers: Smaller blooms that complement the focal flowers (e.g., celosia, statice, tansy).

  • Fillers and greenery: Add volume and texture (e.g., eucalyptus, baby’s breath, basil).

Try to mix textures and shapes for a dynamic look.

Step 3: Pick a Color Scheme

Stick with 2–3 colors that complement each other. You can go with:

  • Soft and romantic: Blush Pinks, Creams, and Light Greens

  • Bold and bright: Red, Purples, and Hot Pink

  • Earthy and Neutral: Whites, Browns, and Deep Greens

Use color to set the mood of your bouquet—whether it's cozy, vibrant, or elegant. Want a whimsical bouquet? Try picking a variety of bold colors and types of flowers. Want a more minimalistic look? Try choosing a monochromatic palate.

Step 4: Prepare Your Flowers

Now it's time to prep:

  • Remove any leaves that will sit below the waterline or in your hand.

  • Trim stems at a 45-degree angle (this helps them absorb water).

  • Separate flowers by type so you can see everything clearly while arranging.

Step 5: Arrange the Bouquet

Start with greens, add focal flowers, then layer in supporting blooms and fillers. Rotate the bouquet as you go for even spacing and a natural shape.

Step 6: Tie It All Together

Once you’re happy with the way your bouquet looks, it’s time to trim the stems! After you cut the stems you can either put your vase directly into your vase or wrap your flowers up to gift to someone. When creating your perfect bouquet there is no wrong answer. Each one is unique to whoever creates it. That’s what makes flowers so special. There is so much potential and so many endless possibilities for the arrangements you can make.
